Cruise Ship Collided With Cargo Vessel Caused Injuries
Costa Classica, an Italian cruise ship on an Asian cruise collided with a cargo vessel in China last October 19. The crash happened right in the mouth of Yangtze River early morning of the said date.
Costa Classica suffered a huge gash at the right side of the boat with some of the passengers getting injured. There were in fact, three people hospitalized because of the incident.
Although the ship managed to reach Shanghai safely, it had to cancel its scheduled trips to other neighboring Asian countries such as Korea, Japan and Hong Kong.
The ship was on its way to the port when the accident happened at 4:45 am. The ship finally docked at 10 am. A total of 1,311 passengers were on board the ship when it happened, majority of which were Asians with a few Americans and Canadians.
The cargo vessel was an 86,848-ton bulk carrier owned by the Belgian company Lowlands Longevity. The cargo vessel was said to be travelling in the same direction as the ship.
According to the official statement sent by Costa, after the accident, their medical staff attended to several guests on board who sought medical attention. Most of these guests only suffered minor injuries. Three of them, however, were sent to a Shanghai hospital after arriving at the port.
Furthermore, the statement said the company is working with Marine Safety Administration of Shanghai to investigate the regretful incident.
It further announced the cancellation of their October 18 trip with Shanghai – Japan – Korea – Hong Kong route. Finally, the company asked for apology for all the inconveniences caused by the said incident.
Costa’s Classica cruise ship features 654 cabins, two pools, four Jacuzzis, two restaurants, two-storey theatre, disco, casino, squash club, Playstation entertainment for kids, and a wellness center featuring a sauna, gym, Turkish bath and treatment rooms.
